Delft Schieoevers Kabeldistrict
transformation strategy
The Kabeldistrict Area is one of the major development locations along the Schie canal in Delft. It is an industrial site in close proximity to the city centre. A huge industrial hall of 225 x 300 metres will be gradually transformed into a mixed use area. Urhahn Urban Design designed a framework based on the concept to build a new dynamic neighbourhood for young people, a target group that has until now always left Delft for the bigger Dutch cities. Kick off for the development is a bridge for pedestrians and bicycles, connecting the Technical University campus with the post war residential areas of Delft. By keeping parts of the industrial building as well as the chimney and other characteristic objects, the new development will retain an industrial touch. Urhahn’s plan has defined the outlines and design guidance, but not the precise lay out, allowing for an ‘organic urbanism’ and sustainable development.
