Urban design
The Arnhem City Council decided not to proceed with the construction of a new harbour in the town centre in March 2010, one of the main proposals of the Rijnboog Masterplan (2004, De Sola Morales). Because the city aimed to continue the intention of the Masterplan; connecting the city with the Rhine, an invited competition was held to make a new design for the Nieuwstraat area, the former 'harbour quarter'. Urhahn Urban Design won this competition, and created the urban design. The design includes an arts cluster, 15,000 sqm retail floor and 240 homes (apartments as well as ground-oriented houses). Urhahn Urban Design, together with the city and the commercial stakeholders, developed a plan that complements the existing street pattern, yet adds its own quality and atmosphere to the existing centre.
